Square Enix, the renowned developer of popular JRPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, has teamed up with Animoca Brands, a major metaverse investment firm, to create its own crypto-based NFT game. The collaboration aims to enhance marketing efforts for “Symbiogenesis,” the game, and its collection of 10,000 Ethereum NFTs.
Animoca Brands Japan will provide support in expanding the game’s presence in international markets, NFT sales, and collaboration with other companies within Animoca’s portfolio. Kensuke Amo, COO of Animoca Brands Japan, expressed excitement about working with Square Enix and their world-class content and IP.
“Symbiogenesis” is a PC narrative adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic high fantasy world. Players assume the roles of their Ethereum NFT avatars and can interact with other in-game NFTs on the Polygon network. An NFT is required to access the game.
The game’s story unfolds on a floating continent in a polluted future version of Earth, where humans struggle to survive against mythical dragons. It will be featured in Animoca Brands Japan’s upcoming NFT launchpad, scheduled to launch this summer with support for Ethereum and Polygon.
This collaboration is not the first between Square Enix and Animoca. In 2020, Square Enix led an investment round in the popular NFT game “The Sandbox,” owned by Animoca. They also released Final Fantasy VII-based NFTs on Polygon in 2022 and invested $35 million in Bitcoin gaming and payment platform Zebedee.
Square Enix recently made separate investments in crypto-native PC launcher apps Hyperplay and Elixer Games. Naoyuki Tamate, the producer of Symbiogenesis, expressed excitement about the partnership with Animoca Brands Japan and their joint efforts to bring the Web3 experience to a wider audience.
