Embrace the Spirit of Halloween in the Metaverse with Crypto Rewards and Costumes
The traditional Halloween festivities of dressing up and indulging in candy have taken on a virtual twist in the Web3 community. This year, numerous parties in the Metaverse are offering people from all over the world the opportunity to celebrate Halloween.
Sebastien Borget, the COO and Co-Founder of the metaverse-gaming platform The Sandbox, believes that as society becomes more modernized, online communities will continue to grow. Recent statistics show a rise in Metaverse user growth, with an estimated 2,633 million users by 2030.
In line with this trend, The Sandbox is currently hosting a Halloween-themed event called “Spooky Season 4” within their latest and most popular Metaverse experience, Alpha Season 4. Participants are invited to engage in eerie games, earn in-game SAND rewards, dress up their avatars in festive costumes, and unleash their creativity by designing Halloween-themed experiences. Borget expects that themed events like Spooky Season 4 will generate increased participation within The Sandbox, and the winning experiences will share a prize pool of 30,000 SAND rewards.
Decentraland, one of the largest Metaverse projects in Web3, is also joining in the Halloween celebrations. On October 31, the platform will host the “Tru Band Room 3rd Anniversary & Halloween Bash,” featuring a live performance by self-taught musician Ash Orphan. Decentraland’s “Exodus 2024 Halloween” event, running from now until November 3, allows players to earn additional in-game rewards and unlock unique costumes for their avatars. Kim Currier, Head of Partnerships and Marketing at the Decentraland Foundation, emphasizes that celebrating Halloween in virtual worlds enables users to connect with others without the need to travel. She also highlights the endless opportunities for costumes and outfit changes in the Metaverse, where users can effortlessly switch outfits using community-created wearables.
Upland, a Metaverse platform focused on virtual real estate, is not to be left out of the Halloween excitement. Users can decorate their virtual properties with Halloween assets, just as they would in real life. Upland is also running a social contest where players can take unique pictures inside its immersive haunted plaza, designed by a player who won Upland’s design contest this year. Lucky winners of the contest will receive up to 50,000 UPX (Upland in-game currency).
These Halloween events are expected to drive increased engagement in the Metaverse. Danny Brown Wolf, Upland’s Chief of Staff, notes that Halloween is traditionally their strongest day in terms of daily active users. Similarly, Currier highlights that holiday events are always a highlight in Decentraland, sparking a boost in activity and providing a platform for the community to showcase their creativity.
Borget points out that Halloween and other festivities offer a unique opportunity for Metaverse platforms to engage with their community by offering limited-edition rewards. The Sandbox, for instance, has airdropped a special Pumpkin Mask NFT for all Sandbox LAND owners and avatar holders. Owners of the Pumpkin Mask NFT who complete the quests in Spooky Season 4 will receive a share of the 30,000 SAND prize pool. The Ethos Points collected from these quests will also contribute to their Battle Pass progression in Alpha Season 4, unlocking rewards beyond the Spooky Season 4 event.
However, users should exercise caution during the holiday season. Woody Cheng, Vice President of Business Development at hardware wallet provider SecuX, warns of Halloween-themed “crypto horror stories” that can involve phishing scams, fake airdrops, and malicious links. Cheng advises users to be wary of urgent and attractive offers that could lead to revealing private keys or sending funds to fake wallet addresses, resulting in a loss of funds. Additionally, market volatility during Halloween can lead to impulsive buying or panic-selling, making investors vulnerable to scams and market manipulation.
