Nadeem Anjarwalla, an executive at Binance, had his human rights lawsuit dismissed by a Nigerian court on June 19. The lawsuit was filed after the tax charges against Anjarwalla were dropped, but he was still detained by the Nigerian authorities. Judge Inyang Ekwo rejected Anjarwalla’s claims of “diligent prosecution” during the hearing. Anjarwalla did not have legal representation present at the hearing. Anjarwalla and Tigran Gambaryan, another Binance executive, were detained in February for allegedly violating Nigeria’s anti-money laundering laws. Anjarwalla managed to escape in March and has evaded authorities since then. The tax charges against the executives have been dismissed, but the charges brought by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are still pending. Gambaryan remains in custody, despite reports of declining health. His family and friends have petitioned for his release, citing poor conditions in the detention facility. Members of the U.S. Congress have also written a letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to secure Gambaryan’s safe return. They claim that Gambaryan has been subjected to excessive and harsh treatment during his detainment.
