The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Pakistan’s central bank, is making efforts to expedite the progress of a digital version of its currency, the rupee. The aim is to potentially introduce the digital rupee by 2025. Governor Jameel Ahmad disclosed this plan in July 2023, highlighting the importance of studying the experiences of other central banks with Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Ahmad stressed the need for a cautious approach, with a focus on creating a meticulously crafted and secure digital currency specifically tailored for Pakistan.
