Actress Sydney Sweeney’s X account has fallen prey to a fraudulent scheme involving a Solana-based memecoin scam. Known for her role in “Euphoria,” Sweeney’s social media handle was hacked on Tuesday to promote a memecoin named SWEENEY. The misleading posts, subsequently deleted, purportedly announced the launch of this token under her endorsement.
The scam’s perpetrators falsely claimed it was an official initiative linked to the actress. “Well, I think it’s time,” declared the deceptive promotion, announcing SWEENEY’s supposed live status with an influx of 100 million coins.
This incident marks the second time this year that Sweeney’s account has been compromised. In January, hackers utilized her profile to propagate a Solana-based token with a sexual theme. Despite skepticism from some crypto-savvy users on Twitter, the SWEENEY token amassed over $1 million in market capitalization within hours of the hoax.
Swiftly regaining control of her account, Sweeney promptly removed all fraudulent tweets. As of now, she has refrained from issuing any public statement regarding the breach.
The identity of the hackers behind the SWEENEY token has been partially exposed, as they openly confessed on a Telegram channel to hacking her account. They also admitted responsibility for similar fraudulent promotions involving celebrities like rapper 50 Cent and ex-wrestler Hulk Hogan.
Furthermore, the hackers hinted at targeting another high-profile figure soon, without specifying details. They encouraged potential investors to participate in a presale by sending a minimum of 5 SOL (approximately $740 at current rates) to an anonymous Solana wallet.
In an era where celebrity-endorsed memecoins are increasingly vulnerable to scams, incidents like these highlight the risks involved. Recently, American rapper Rich The Kid faced a similar situation when posts promoting his token ‘RICH’ were swiftly deleted without confirmation of its legitimacy.
The trend underscores the need for caution and vigilance among investors navigating the volatile landscape of cryptocurrency investments.
