Ripple’s CTO, David Schwartz, issues a warning to the XRP community about a new phishing scam
Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, known for his advocacy against cryptocurrency scams, has raised concerns about a new phishing scam targeting the XRP community. Schwartz took to his social media account, X (formerly Twitter), to alert users about suspicious messages related to copyright investigations, labeling them as fraudulent.
“If you receive a DM like this, it’s a scam. The link will take you to a phishing site designed to steal your login and personal information,” Schwartz cautioned.
The warning came after Schwartz shared a post from a Georgian user using the pseudonym “three-year letterman,” who received a direct message claiming their account was under investigation for copyright violations. The message included a link to a form that users were instructed to fill out within 24 hours to avoid account suspension.
Although the message did not mention cryptocurrencies specifically, Schwartz aimed to raise awareness within the XRP community about the potential risks of falling victim to such scams.
In a separate incident, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse was targeted by scammers using deepfake technology to create a video urging users to invest in a fraudulent scheme promising to double their holdings. Garlinghouse later clarified that the video was fake and warned users to be cautious.
Schwartz’s recent warning about the phishing scam comes shortly after his denial on X that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin. Posting a selfie from the Consensus 2024 event, Schwartz humorously declared, “Finally, absolute proof I am not Satoshi.” Despite his repeated attempts to debunk rumors linking him to Nakamoto, Schwartz has inadvertently gained a following of believers who think otherwise.
